Root Canals
What are Root Canals?
A root canal is a type of procedure that involves removing the pulp of a tooth. Each tooth has an inner pulp that’s responsible for housing the blood supply and nerves in charge of keeping the tooth healthy and vital. If the pulp becomes infected, decayed or exposed, we will recommend that it be removed. This is done via a root canal that can be performed directly in our office.
Why are Root Canals needed?
A root canal is typically needed if a cavity was left untreated for too long or you’re dealing with aggressive tooth decay. Another reason you may need a root canal is because the tooth has cracked and caused the pulp to be exposed. If you need a root canal, it is best to have the procedure done as soon as possible. This can prevent further damage to the tooth, causing the eventual need for an extraction.
Who is a candidate for Root Canals?
To determine if you may need a root canal, we will perform an exam and take x-rays. This will help us to decipher if you’ll require a root canal and if so, the best way to go about providing you with treatment. We recommend that if a root canal is needed, you have the procedure done as soon as possible.
What happens during Root Canals?
We begin by administering a local anesthetic to numb the area. The decay is removed and we work to take out the pulp inside. Once the pulp is removed, we carefully clean the canals of the tooth to clear away any remaining pulp matter. We then fill the canals with a special medicated material and place a filling in the actual tooth. The filling is cured with a bright light and you’ll be ready to go about your day after leaving the office.
